Drought in a temperate rainforest
For the six years that I have been living on Gabriola, we have had summer droughts with no rainfall for up to three months, during which time BC has had severe forest fires. The worst fire completely destroyed the town of Litton in 2021, which one year later is still under an evacuation order.
During the winter months, we have been having heavy rains, and even experiencing what is called an atmospheric river.
Because of the ever more extreme weather patterns due to climate change, gardening on Gabriola involves a lot of watering during the summer months.
This past weekend I was away, and when I returned on Monday was greeted by a big surprise - my rain catchment cistern had magically appeared! Now I will have plenty of water to water my garden during the dry months.
